Lash Extension Aftercare Is So Important

One of the best parts of having eyelash extensions is gazing at your full, fluffy lash line in the mirror after your appointment.

But what’s the secret to keeping your lashes looking great? Fully committing to an aftercare routine!

Proper aftercare plays a vital role in the retention of your lash extensions and the overall health of your lashes. You are protecting your investment, both lashes and body!

Lash Extension Care Begins Immediately After Your Appointment

When it comes to caring for lash extensions, it’s important to know that the eyelash extension adhesive can take up to 8 hours to fully cure. This means that within that 8-hour window, you should avoid anything that will get your lashes wet. This means no saunas, tanning, workouts, swimming or long, steamy showers. So, save the beach for the day after your appointment!

How to Care For Lash Extensions

If you don’t keep your lashes clean, makeup, oil and debris will accumulate along your lash line. This buildup breaks down the adhesive bond that attaches your lash extensions to your natural lashes. That means poor retention, aka: your extensions will fall off faster than your natural lash shedding cycle and your lash line will have gaps. Lack of proper cleaning can also cause blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), so it’s so important to stay on top of our easy-breezy lash extension aftercare routine.

Follow our lash extensions aftercare instructions to ensure your lashes are being properly taken care of.

Step 3: Protect

Apply our Lash Armor® protective coating by tapping the brush along the base of your lashes, both under and on top of the lash line. This will ensure your lashes stay protected from daily dirt and debris, giving you better retention. Just be sure to wait 24 hours after your lash extension service to apply. This step can be repeated 3 times a week for maximum protection. Click here to learn more about applying our lash sealant!

Step 4: Groom

When you wake up, after a shower and any time your lashes could use a little fluff, use our Crystal Lash Wand to gently comb through your lashes. If you see a few lashes fall out after brushing, don’t worry! This is all part of your natural lash shedding process.

Hot Tip: Buy a second lash wand to keep in your car or purse to groom on the go!

Step 1: Prep

Every night, wipe away your makeup with our Gel Eye Makeup Remover. This oil- and alcohol-free formula is infused with hydrolyzed soy protein to remove any trace of makeup, oil and debris while conditioning, moisturizing and soothing your skin. Apply half a pump daily with our Lint-Free Wipes. Gently wipe along the bottom and top lid lines, extending outward to the brows. Since it’s water based and made with the same pH as natural tears, it’s also great to use as an all-over makeup remover!

Step 2: Cleanse

Time for a lash bath! Daily, apply one or two pumps of our Lash Detox foaming cleanser onto the back of your hand. With your eyes closed, use our eyelash cleansing brush to gently sweep the cleanser along your lash line and down, from the base of your eyelashes to the tips, for approximately 1 minute. After you’ve had your lash bath, gently rinse your eye area with cool water until the area is product free and squeaky clean. Dry by gently patting the skin with a Lint-Free Wipe or allow to air dry.

Lash Extension Aftercare Tips

Outside of a proper aftercare routine, make sure you follow these lash extension “musts” to help extend the longevity of your lashes and keep them looking their best:

  • Don’t miss or postpone your lash fill appointments. Getting your lashes refilled every 2 weeks is necessary to keep that lash line looking full. We love seeing you come in routinely for your refills! Become a member to save on fills!
  • Be gentle with your lashes. Avoid rubbing your eyes and picking or pulling at your lashes. Not only can this cause your lash extensions to fall off prematurely, but it is also damaging to your natural lashes.
  • Avoid alcohol- and oil-based skincare or cosmetic products near or around your eye area. Both oil and alcohol will break down the lash adhesive, causing premature lash fallout. This also means no waterproof mascara! If you still want to use a little mascara for some extra oomph, try our Amplify + Extend Mascara Duo for an extension-safe option.

Healthy Lashes Are the Best Lashes

Our Gel Eye Makeup Remover, Lash Detox foaming cleanser, Eyelash Cleansing Brush and Crystal Lash Wand are non-negotiables when it comes to caring for your lash extensions.

Add our Lint-Free Wipes to your routine for major convenience and use our Amplify + Extend Mascara Duo to add a little extra sparkle to your lash line without compromising your extensions’ adhesive bond.

Frequently Asked Questions

For best results, you should come in for a lash refill every two weeks.

The number one way to take care of your eyelash extensions is to regularly clean them with an oil-free cleanser, such as our Lash Detox foaming cleanser. It is also important to brush through them daily to avoid any tangling, and to avoid tugging or picking at your lashes.

Yes, of course! Just be sure to wait 8 hours after your service to get them wet. After that, feel free to shower, work out and enjoy beach days! If you’re going on more vigorous swims, just make sure to pack a pair of goggles to reduce excess friction.

The best way to avoid tangled lashes is to simply switch to sleeping on your back. When you wake up, make sure you are brushing through your lashes with our Crystal Lash Wand to fluff your lashes back into place.

If you want to add some extra protection to your lashes while you sleep, consider wearing our 3D Contoured Sleep Mask! It will keep your lashes from getting tangled and smashed while you sleep.

No! Properly cleaning your lashes protects your eyelids from blepharitis and premature lash fallout. If not cleaned regularly, makeup and debris will build up on your lash line, weakening the adhesive bond between your extensions and your natural lashes, causing them to fall out faster.

We do not recommend using micellar water on your extensions due to it commonly containing glycol, which will break the adhesive down and result in poor retention. If you need a lash extension-friendly makeup remover, try our Gel Eye Makeup Remover.

Yes, you can, but most guests discover they don’t need it with lash extensions! If you wish to add a little extra drama to your lash line, be sure to use a lash extension-friendly mascara to avoid damage and premature lash fallout—like our Amplify + Extend Mascara Duo.
