Fall Lash Shedding: How to Care for Your Eyelash Extensions
October is officially here and fall is in the air! But what do we dread about our favorite season? Fall lash shedding. Today, we’re sharing why this happens and what you can do in order to keep your lashes lush and full! #yourewelcome
WHAT IS LASH SHEDDING?
Remember when you’d make a wish after noticing a fallen lash? Yes, that was lash shedding and we all experience it, even with lash extensions.
Even though they completely replenish and regrow every 60–90 days, our lashes fall out in cycles. But don’t worry, this IS a healthy part of our hair-growth routine. On average, we lose up to 20% of our natural lashes every two weeks and, depending on our individual hair-growth, we can shed between 1 and 5 natural eyelashes per day.
The cool thing is that right at this very moment you have a new eyelash growing to replace a lash that fell out and, for the majority of us, this is a process that we hardly notice.
FALL LASH SHEDDING: WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
You know how some animals shed their winter coats? Well, it’s mostly the same for us and lash shedding!
Why does this happen and why this time of year? As fall approaches and the seasons and temperatures begin to change, so does the humidity. This change is what can alter our lash growth cycle and can be the reason we notice a few fallen lashes here and there.
During this time, our bodies are increasing oil production to keep not only our hair, but also our skin from getting dehydrated. Just like it’s not uncommon for us to notice additional shedding with the hair on our head this time of year, it’s the same with our lashes.
HOW DOES LASH SHEDDING AFFECT EYELASH EXTENSIONS?
Here’s the deal: Lash shedding does not magically stop when you have extensions. It’s important to know that when you have a natural eyelash that sheds, your extension will go with it. For all of us, each individual eyelash is programmed to reach a certain length, fall out, then regrow, taking the extension along for the ride.
But, there’s good news! As long as you keep up with your lash refill appointments every 2–3 weeks (like the good lash guest we know you are…wink, wink), your lash line will stay full and gorgeous!
Another quick tip: Brush your lashes daily with a clean lash wand. This will keep your lashes in place and help to brush away any residue that may have landed along your lash line.
EYELASH EXTENSION CARE DURING THE SHEDDING CYCLE
Keep Your Lashes Clean
When you notice your lashes are shedding, one important thing to do is to keep your extensions clean. Why? During a seasonal change, additional buildup can accumulate along your lash line. To prevent this, use a lash extension-safe cleanser like our Lash Detox foaming cleansers that will not only keep your lashes squeaky clean, but can also be used as an all-over facial cleanser. Talk about a win-win!
Use A Lash Sealant
Investing in a lash sealant is a good idea year-round, especially during the fall season. While it will not keep your lashes from shedding, a sealant will extend the life of the adhesive, locking your extensions in place for a longer period of time. Just think of it as an extra layer of protection for your lashes during the fall lash shedding season.
We have 2 sealants here at The Lash Lounge:
Our Lash Armor Crystal is a daily-use product extends the life of your extensions. Our Lash Armor Onyx is the same as our Crystal formula, except it adds a dark sheen.
Do yourself a favor and snag one of these “must-have” sealants during your next appointment. You’ll thank us later!
Keep Up with Your Lash Refills
Like we’ve mentioned before, it’s so important you do not miss a lash refill appointment…like, ever! Coming in for refills every 2 weeks will allow you to maintain that voluptuous lash look you love, even during the lash shedding cycle. Check out our membership options to make it even easier!
